βAn indispensable step to promote broad market reach for electric vehicles is the avoidance of future incompatibility, dead-ends and stranded investment. We need to work out a cross-industry agreement on standards for the hardware β the connector and cables β plus the communication software needed to re-charge plug-in vehicles,β Padraig McManus, Chief Executive of Irish energy group ESB and EURELECTRIC Board Member, told the audience and the assembled press at a EURELECTRIC Electric Vehicle Event in Brussels on 27 October.
Electricity sector chief executives, power distribution system managers and representatives of national electricity associations gathered to discuss how to pave the way for rapid deployment and market penetration of plug-in electric and hybrid vehicles. They handed over to the European Commission Vice-President responsible for Transport, Antonio Tajani, a Declaration on the standardisation of EV charging infrastructure and called upon all transport and energy stakeholders to support the drive to achieve a standard for electric vehicle charging systems and thus help to make convenient electric road mobility across Europe a reality for citizens. |
