EURELECTRIC Conference
“BUILDING A SECURE AND SUSTAINABLE FUTURE: HOW CAN MARKET INTEGRATION CONTRIBUTE?”
17 March 2010
Hotel Renaissance, Rue du Parnasse 19, 1050 Brussels
Introduction
"Building a secure and sustainable energy future cannot be achieved without an integrated market", declared EURELECTRIC Secretary General Hans ten Berge in his opening statement. He emphasised the importance cross-boarder capacities
in order to achieve the integration of renewable energy sources into the market and the integration of the market as such.
He also raised the question of how to balance and counterbalance the intermittent Renewable Energy Sources. "Looking at how RES can be brought to the load centres, it is not anymore a national debate but an European one", he added.
In this respect, Hans ten Berge stressed the need for greater political support: "Progress has been made in regional markets, but we must move faster to meet the 2020 targets. Further political support is needed to achieve the set aims",
he concluded.
“A
regional integration process has been initiated but a pan-European market
is still not within reach”, declared Eric van Vliet; Vice-Chairman of
the EURELECTRIC Markets Committee in a keynote speech entitled “Why is
market integration the key to ensuring competition, security of supply and
sustainability?”. A
single EU market will lead to price convergence and increased social
welfare. It will also enable European-wide competition and contribute to
ensuring security of supply. Additionally, it constitutes the most
efficient way of achieving the 20/20/20 targets. “A more integrated market
will mean more renewables”, he added while underlining that an integrated
wholesale market and grid development are key to meeting the RES
(renewable energy sources) objectives. Eric
van Vliet considered the 3rd Energy Package to be a good
impetus for further market integration; he saw as the key problem the huge
differences in the application of regulations in individual member states.
He thus called for a comprehensive, EU-wide, market integration strategy.
