Welcome addresses
"Customer behaviour is key to a carbon-neutral society", EURELECTRIC Secretary General
Hans ten Berge declared in opening the joint EURELECTRIC/International Energy Agency Demand Side Management (IEA-DSM) as part of the EU Sustainable Energy Week. He reiterated the electricity industry's commitment to move Europe towards a carbon-neutral society, underlining however that actions from the electricity sector alone will not be sufficient. "A decarbonised electricity system plus a paradigm shift to energy-efficient demand-side technologies is what's needed", he added.
"Demand Side activities and technologies should be the first choice in all energy policy decisions designed to create more reliable and more sustainable energy systems", declared
Hans Nilsson, Chairman of the International Energy Agency’s Demand Side Management Programme (IEA DSM) in his welcome address. Indeed, 52% of greenhouse gas emissions could be reduced by 2030 through improvements in energy efficiency (IEA World Energy Outlook 2009). Raising awareness and ensuring acceptance for energy efficiency in society as a whole is indeed absolutely crucial to release its full potential. He concluded that "to achieve this objective, global cooperation is needed".
