“Role and Benefits of Electricity to Society”
WELCOME TO EURELECTRIC’s ANNUAL CONVENTION AND
CONFERENCE
Where better to hold a conference on the “Role and
Benefits of Electricity to Society” than in the city of Oslo, where
66% of its energy needs are met with electricity. The city itself is a
major electricity producer, owning facilities in several parts of Norway,
including a small 100 year old plant, Hammeren, at the edge of the
Nordmarka forest.
Because so much of the energy it uses comes from
clean and sustainable sources, Oslo is one of the cities in Europe where
per capita greenhouse gas emissions are lowest. The large proportion of
electricity and district heating in the energy mix also results in
better local air quality.
Today, in this green and energy-efficient city, the
Union
of the Electricity Industry – EURELECTRIC will attempt to give
policy-makers, stakeholders and the public at large a vision of the key
role that electricity can play in furthering economic progress and
social development, harnessing technological innovation and promoting
environmental protection goals.
The coming decades will be dominated by the challenge
of developing an energy-efficient, low-carbon, energy secure and
competitive economy, which will require forward-looking, ambitious, but
also realistic and coherent action. A declaration endorsed by
EURELECTRIC’s core membership in Vienna last June - and signed by close
to a 100 leading executives of European electricity companies - argues
that these expectations can and should be met by further electrification
of both the European and the global economy.
Electricity plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap
between energy requirements and sustainable development and is the
driver and medium for achieving higher standards of living and working
conditions throughout the world; reducing external fuel dependency;
providing cost-effective electro-technological solutions to the
challenges of climate change; and promoting an energy efficient,
competitive and secure economy.
The Electricity Industry is committed to these goals
and to securing a bright energy future for Europe.
The EURELECTRIC Annual Convention and Conference will
analyse and debate the advantages of this key energy vector in a bid to
ensure that the vital role played by electricity today and in the
society of tomorrow is more fully recognised and understood by all
stakeholders - policymakers, citizens and customers alike.
This exclusive, Industry-organised event will tackle
the benefits of electricity to society in three focused sessions:
-
The End User and the Role of Electricity
-
Technology and the Role of Electricity, and
-
Policy-making and the Role of Electricity
The event will kick off with an Executive Forum -
“Market Development: Where Do We Stand?” - which will look at the
integration of European wholesale markets towards the ultimate goal of
the liberalisation process, notably a pan-European electricity, and
indeed energy market.
We do hope you will find the EURELECTRIC Convention
and Conference a stimulating, valuable and enjoyable event.
