POST CONFERENCE PROGRAMME

The Royal Fjord Tour 14th –16th of June 2006

Wednesday 14th of June 2006

This tour combines a beautiful boat journey on the Sognefjord with a spectacular train journey on the Flåm Railway. You will start the journey in Oslo by the Bergen Railway. The Bergen Railway is Northern Europe’s highest railway, and the journey represents an unique experience. At Finse, you pass the highest point on the Bergen Railway and you’ll get a view of the Hardangerjøkulen glacier. Bergen Railway was recognized to be one of the 20 best railway experiences in the world in 1999.

When you arrive at Myrdal station and board the train on the Flåm Railway, you are starting an incredible train journey. On The Flåm Railway the train descends slowly and the views of sheer cliff faces make it difficult to believe that you can take a train through this landscape. Once you are down in Flåm, nestled in the innermost corner of the Aurlandsfjord, there is time to have lunch at Furukroa. You will be served a nice lunch buffet including starters, warm main courses and dessert, coffee and tee.

The journey by expressboat out in the Sognefjord has views of tall, impressive mountains along the Aurlandsfjord. There will be a stopover in Balestrand where you will enjoy dinner and stay the night at the historic Kvikne’s Hotel. Rooms are booked in the beautiful, historical part of the hotel with views of the fjord.

Thursday 15th of June 2006

In the morning you have time to enjoy your breakfast at the hotel before going on a fjordcruise to Fjærland. In Fjærland you will visit the Norwegian Glacier Museum and take a trip to Boyabreen glacier. The ferry takes you back to Balestrand where you change to the expressboat for the last part of the tour to Bergen. Out towards the sea, the scenery becomes more open and is teeming with a variety of bird life. The Sognefjord is Norway’s deepest (1309 m) and longest (204 km) fjord. In Bergen you’ll arrive at the Strandkaiterminalen and your hotel is located only 200 meters from this terminal. You will stay the night at Hotel Augustin, and dinner in Bergen will be on your own.
