Electricity production in the European Union (EU) slightly increased between 2002 and 2001 by 0.6%.

The highest increase was registered, Netherlands (+3.5), Denmark (3.3%), Spain (2.8%) and Belgium (2.5%).

The exceptional increase in Luxembourg is due to a new cogeneration plant coming on stream. There was a substantial decrease Sweden (-9.1%), a moderate one in Greece and Portugal (-1.6%) and Ireland (-0.4%).

With regard the structure of electricity production in the EU it can be seen that in 2002:

In 2002 electricity exchange has shown an increase in respect to the previous year. For the EU 15, the share of the sum of exports plus imports as a percentage of total net generation is 16.7% and it was 15.5% in 2001. Total net imports for the EU 15 were 36.9 TWh representing 1.4% of the production. Italy, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Finland remain the largest importers.

The EU 15 Maximum Net Generating Capacity in 2002 decreased by 0.6%. Decreases were registered in Denmark (-3.4%), Austria (-2.0%). Large increases were registered in Ireland (+14.1%) followed by the one in Spain (+7.5%).

Energy Supplied in the European Union amounted to 2555.4 TWh in 2002. There were substantial increases in Spain (2.4%), Finland (3.3%) and Ireland (2.6%).

The situation and performance of the electricity sector in the Candidate Countries (CCs) in 2002 and the changes compared to the previous year can be summarized as follow:

Electricity production in the CCs increased by 1.7%. Large increases were in Turkey (6.5%), Romania (3.3%), Slovakia (2.7%), Czech Republic (2.3%) and Lithuania. Decreases were observed in Poland and Bulgaria.

With regard the structure of electricity production in the CCs it can be seen that in 2002:

In 2002, total net exports for the CCs were 31.1 TWh and electricity exchange, as the share of the sum of exports plus imports as a percentage of total net generation, has increased from 15.1% to 19.5%.

The Maximum net generating capacity for the 13 CCs increased by 5.1%. Turkey (12.4%), Romania (10.6%) and Czech Republic (5.5%) registered large increase.

Energy supplied in the CCs amounted to 487.2 TWh registering an increase of 0.5% in respect of the previous year.
