Energy Roadmap 2050: Empowering Europe!

EURELECTRIC Meeting Centre (6th floor)

The electricity industry plays a pivotal role in delivering a low-carbon economy and society in Europe. With the publication of the Energy Roadmap 2050, the European Commission has thrown its weight behind the decarbonisation agenda and set out a longer term vision for the EU energy policy in the decades to come.

EURELECTRIC stands firm on its commitment of delivering carbon-neutral electricity by mid-century, as declared by some sixty Chief Executives of electricity companies back in March 2009. To deliver on this important objective though, the European institutions need to empower the electricity sector by:

  • Paving the way for economy-wide CO2 reduction targets for 2030 and beyond;
  • Establishing RD&D as the driver in bringing low-carbon technologies to the market;
  • And delivering energy policy goals based on cost-efficiency.

This event, bringing together high-level energy experts and key policymakers, took stock of the European Commission proposal and identify the challenges ahead for our sector, investigating how they will affect the ability of electricity companies to raise the investments necessary to underpin such massive change and identifying the market arrangements needed to make the shift possible in the most cost-efficient way. It highlighted the framework that the industry needs to reach its and the EU's decarbonisation goal and that will ultimately make the advancement towards a low-carbon economy and society possible.
