Integrating EU and CIS Power Systems and Markets – A Way to Increase Security of Supply

Renaissance Hotel

In the framework of the EU-Russia Energy Dialogue, EURELECTRIC and the Electric Power Council of the Confederation of Independent States (EPC CIS) had the pleasure in inviting you to their joint conference "Electricity Market Integration of the EU and the CIS Electric Power systems - a way of increasing Security of Supply", which was held in Brussels on 31 October 2012.

The cooperation established between the two organisations has helped build over time a mutual understanding of the challenges facing the electricity sector as well as raise greater awareness on the desired level of approximation in the policies and legislations of the EU and the CIS countries.
As their dialogue enters into its 10th year of collaboration, EURELECTRIC and EPC CIS marked this date with a dedicated event where the two associations presented their milestones and main achievements in the field of market and environment.

This event was intended to address a whole range of issues pertaining to the development of liberalised electricity markets across the EU and CIS countries, their specificities as well as their degree of convergence, the foreseeable means to make cross-border trade more efficient, the level of cooperation in the Baltic region and the fulfilment of a EURELECTRIC/EPC CIS roadmap on key environmental protection.

How can we stimulate efficient cross-border trade - and what are existing impediments? How do we ensure that capacity is allocated to those who value it most?  Which is the optimal division of responsibilities in the different electricity systems? Do we need harmonised electricity market rules - and if so, which ones? This workshop allowed an exchange of views on the challenges experienced and the lessons learnt in both markets.

This workshop received the support of the European Commission.
