Europe urgently needs an innovation strategy that increases its competitiveness. Innovation in the energy sector is particularly important in the current economic climate and can contribute to more than just the delivery of energy and climate targets; innovation offers real opportunity to strengthen the medium and long-term potential of the economy and is one of the keys to emerging from the current downturn and putting countries back on a path to sustainable - and smarter - growth. Major investment decisions of radical strategic importance need to be taken in the coming years and innovation in the power sector is at the very heart of the transition that will lead us to a low-carbon economy, reconciling continued growth with increasing environmental concerns.

"Innovative Investments: Re-energising Europe" was thus the underlying theme of EURELECTRIC's annual convention and conference taking place in Bologna on 3-4 June 2013. Specific conference sessions focused on:

  • Energy policy in an international context - achievements of the last decade
  • Energy policy in an international context - looking ahead to the next decade
  • Innovation as a catalyst for the low-carbon transition
  • Energy leaders' forum / CEO debate on drivers for innovation in the electricity business

A focused exhibition on innovative technologies were also organised on the sidelines of the event. In addition, industry and student awards were given prominent place in the programme. A number of social events was also on the networking agenda.

The EURELECTRIC conference was kindly hosted by Enel and supported by Accenture (as Gold Sponsor), Pöyry (Silver) and Ormazabal (Bronze).
