EURELECTRIC organised its 2014 Annual Convention and Conference on 2-3 June in London. Hosted by Energy UK and entitled "Building Trust in the New Energy World", this two-day event examined short and long-term actions to be addressed by policy makers in order to ensure the right balance between sustainability, affordability and competitiveness of the European electricity industry. The issue of market trust and consumer confidence is the underlying theme of the event, with conference sessions structured as follows:
- The Future of European Power
- A Sustainable and Affordable Energy Transition: How Far? And at What Cost?
- Happily Ever After? Engagement and Trust in the New Energy World
- Energy Leaders Forum: Are customers, politicians and industry on the same line?
The 2014 event came at a crucial time for the energy sector. 2014 was the deadline set by Heads of Government for completing the single European energy market, and important decisions also needed to be taken on Europe's longer-term energy and climate framework. Throughout Europe, policy-makers are grappling with the energy policy "trilemma": how to meet Europe's ambitious sustainability targets while ensuring that the lights stay on and that prices to customers remain affordable.
How far is Europe willing to go to achieve its decarbonisation goals? What is the electricity sector's vision for the energy transition? Will customers support that path? Will competition alone deliver a sustainable and affordable future? These and other key questions were debated at the two-day event which also singled out priorities and recommendations to policymakers for the short and medium-term.
As in the past, particular prominence was given in the conference programme to the EURELECTRIC industry and student awards. A small exhibition was planned on the sidelines and a number of social networking events were also foreseen.
