The air is e-lectric. Conversations are buzzing about the “internet of things”, the internet of just about everything. As the hum gets louder, the cloud-based applications that this revolution is based on is dramatically transforming our everyday lives. The domino effect of its digital undertow impacts the way we live, work, interact and communicate to the extent that it’s difficult to imagine the limits, if any, of its all-encompassing reach.

Entire cities, industries and economies are embracing the digital trend and for businesses and consumers alike, the benefits and opportunities are immense. In the power sector itself, many utilities are already offering a range of comforts in smart and connected homes / workplaces, dotting them with remotely controlled energy management gadgets and devices. The new dynamics this is creating across the electricity value chain is profoundly influencing utility interaction vis-à-vis customers and vice versa – and business models are continually being adapted as a result. With electricity generation and consumption increasingly taking place at the same location, the self-generating customer is also challenging the future of the industry. Empowered customers are becoming ever more demanding and, to some extent, are determining and shaping the direction of industry development and technological innovations.

It is clear that digitisation, combined with the political focus on an efficient and competitive, low-carbon economy, requires a complete re-invention of the electricity / energy industry. EURELECTRIC’s annual convention in Vilnius on 6-7 June 2016 is thus focused on the new “e-lectricity landscape” and the economic, regulatory, environmental and societal factors, which is giving rise to a complex and digitised, low carbon electricity system, with a number of new players emerging.

Main conference themes to be debated at this annual gathering include:

  • Decarbonising in an interconnected and digital world
  • Attracting and empowering customers in smart new ways
  • Enhancing the value of the intelligent grid
  • Smarter power markets in the digital age
  • Governance and politics, out of sync with a fast-changing world?

As in previous years, an exhibition was also organised on the sidelines of the event. In addition, the EURELECTRIC industry and student awards was high on the agenda. A number of social networking events were also foreseen throughout the two-day programme.

The 2016 EURELECTRIC Conference was hosted by the National Lithuanian Electricity Association (Nacionaline Lietuvos Elektros Asociacija - NLEA), member of our industry association. It was kindly sponsored by Accenture, as Gold Sponsor, Pöyry, as Silver Sponsor and Ormazabal, as Bronze sponsor.
