Electricity is decarbonising

The average CO2 content per kWh of electricity produced in Europe continues to decline, as electricity becomes the energy carrier of a decarbonised Europe.

EURELECTRIC data also shows that the average amount of carbon dioxide per kWh of electricity produced in Europe has displayed a downward trajectory. The European power sector has committed to providing carbon-neutral electricity by 2050. Therefore, electricity should be the energy carrier of choice for other sectors where decarbonisation is required.

Allowing further penetration of electricity as an energy carrier across the transportation and heating/cooling sectors in Europe will avoid technological lock-in with carbon-intensive fuels. Providing a win-win situation, these sectors can benefit:

  1. from the continued progress toward full carbon-neutrality electricity is undertaking;
  2. avoid potentially capital-intensive sector-specific carbon reduction strategies; and
  3. ensure that the investments undertaken across the electricity sector provide additional value towards Europe’s decarbonisation efforts.
