Security of Supply

A combination of factors influences the security of electricity supply. These factors include the origin of fuels and their availability on the market, the integration and functioning of the electricity market, as well as the available power generation capacity, storage and demand response.

The share of fossil fuels in the European Union power generation mix has decreased by 6 percentage points between 2012 and 2014, while the share of indigenous renewable energy sources has increased by 5 percentage points over the same period. This increase in share of solar and wind power (which are dependent on weather conditions) as well as the decrease in firm and dispatchable generation capacity imply profound changes and new challenges for security of supply in the power system.

Four countries produce over 20% of their electricity from variable renewables. On average, the share of variable RES in the power mix for EURELECTRIC's members increased by 2.5 percentage points between 2012 and 2014.
