The Association of Power Utilities of Africa is a continental organization that brings together electricity utilities, energy institutions, and key stakeholders from across Africa and beyond. Its primary mission is to foster cooperation, enhance technical capacity, and support the development of reliable, sustainable, and affordable power systems throughout the continent.
APUA serves as a platform for member utilities to exchange expertise, best practices, and operational experience. Through its specialized committees, it addresses relevant and common technical problems encountered by its members and external partners. This collaborative framework enables members to strengthen performance, adopt innovative solutions, and respond effectively to Africa’s evolving energy challenges.
A key objective of APUA is to promote the regional integration of power systems and facilitate cross-border electricity trade. In this regard, APUA works closely with regional power pools and continental institutions, including the African Union Commission, to advance the African Single Electricity Market ( AfSEM). APUA also serves as a coordinator of the AfSEM Forum, collaborating to enhance energy security, optimize resource utilization, and drive economic growth across Africa
In addition, APUA is actively engaged in capacity building, research, and advocacy. It organizes conferences, technical workshops, and studies that support knowledge development and inform policy decisions. Through its African Network of Centers of Excellence in Electricity (ANCEE) initiative, it has trained over 9,000 professionals. By partnering with international organizations, APUA mobilizes resources and investment into Africa’s power sector.
Overall, APUA acts as a unifying voice for African Utilities, driving collaboration and supporting the realization of an integrated, efficient, and sustainable energy future for Africa.
