Digitopia 2024

22—23 October 2024 ∙ 13:30—17:30 ∙ Enlit Europe

As the European electricity grid undergoes a significant transformation, driven by the EU's ambitious decarbonisation objectives and changing industry dynamics, the role of Distribution System Operators (DSOs) becomes increasingly vital. This shift from a centralised, one-way power system to a decentralised, two-way model for both energy and data requires extensive digitalisation to ensure DSOs can effectively support the energy transition.

Digitopia, co-hosted by Enlit Europe and Eurelectric, is a key event where these critical topics will be explored. The discussions will be grounded in insights from the “Wired for Tomorrow” study, conducted by Eurelectric in collaboration with Accenture. This study assesses the digital maturity and technological readiness of European DSOs and serves as the foundation for the summit’s conversations.

Join industry leaders, policymakers, and experts as they delve into customer-centred digitalisation and the delicate balance between grid build-out and flexibility. These discussions aim to chart a clear path forward for DSOs, ensuring they are equipped to meet the challenges of the evolving energy landscape.

Agenda

DIGITOPIA – Panel 1: Meeting the Demands of Customer-Centred Digitalisation

Date: 22 October
Time: 13:30 – 14:30 CET

This panel will explore how DSOs can meet the increasing demands of customer-centred digitalisation. As new and diverse players enter the grid ecosystem, DSOs must modernise to facilitate flexible connection agreements and enhance customer service and reliability, particularly with the growing number of connected Distributed Energy Resources (DERs).

The discussion will cover current priorities for DSOs, such as grid reliability and customer services, and how these translate into digital initiatives like automation, advanced distribution management systems (ADMS), and low voltage monitoring. The panel will also highlight the significant benefits these digitalisation efforts bring to customers, including improved grid reliability, better service, and enhanced empowerment through energy consumption insights.

Confirmed panellists include:

  • Mark van Stiphout, Deputy Head of Unit for DG ENER
  • Kristian Ruby, Secretary General of Eurelectric
  • Beatriz Alonso Santos, DSO Product Developer, Iberdrola
  • Christiane Mann, Working Group Chair, Grid Digitalisation, T&D Europe
  • Moderator: Savannah Altvater, Head of Distribution and Market Facilitation, Eurelectric

DIGITOPIA – Panel 2: Striking the Balance Between Build-Out and Flexibility

Date: 22 October
Time: 14:45 – 15:45 CET

As the demand for clean electricity rises, DSOs and TSOs face the challenge of expanding grid capacity while optimising operations through flexibility mechanisms. The “Wired for Tomorrow” report highlights the underutilisation of digitalisation in grid expansion and flexibility efforts, a gap that this panel will address.

The discussion will focus on how DSOs and TSOs can leverage digital tools, such as dynamic grid management and digital twins, to manage flexibility and efficiency. The panel will also explore the role of smart grid performance indicators (KPIs) in tracking the effectiveness of these digital solutions and ensuring that build-out and flexibility initiatives align with strategic objectives.

Confirmed panellists include:
