Digitopia: Organising for Successful AI Adoption in Utilities

12 November 2026 ∙ 11:30—13:30 ∙ VIECON - Vienna Congress & Convention Center, Business Suites 3&4

AI is quickly becoming indispensable for utilities as electricity systems grow more complex, distributed, and dynamic. Yet our last Digitopia Hub meeting in June 2026 has made one thing clear: technology alone doesn’t deliver value. Successful AI adoption depends on building solid data foundations & organisational readiness — interoperable infrastructure, regulatory‑aligned governance, secure operating frameworks, and collaboration across the ecosystem.

This upcoming Digitopia Hub session will explore how utilities can organise themselves to make AI truly work.

Centralised vs. Decentralised — What’s the right model?

Utilities today face a strategic choice.

  • Centralised data lakes

Unified data and analytics teams promise consistency, strong governance, and efficiency.

  • Data mesh layers and decentralised “pathfinder” teams

Empowering business units to access data and build their own AI use cases accelerates innovation and adoption.

Both approaches have strengths. Both have pitfalls. And both are being tested in real utility environments — from agentic AI pilots to predictive maintenance, load shifting, demand response, and usage‑efficiency optimisation.

Is there a one‑size‑fits‑all approach?

Probably not. The right organisational setup depends on each utility’s regulatory environment digital maturity, legacy system complexity, culture and decision‑making style, investment capacity, etc.

This session will a ground‑truth exchange: what has worked, what hasn’t, and what utilities are learning as they build AI‑ready data foundations.

What will participants gain?

  • Real‑world organisational models tested by utilities
  • Lessons learned from both successes and failures
  • Practical insights on governance, data architecture, and operating models
  • Peer‑to‑peer exchange on unlocking AI use cases at scale

If you want to challenge your assumptions, learn from peers, and explore how utilities are truly organising for AI, then the next Digitopia Hub session at Enlit is the place to be.
