The power proof
The Strait of Hormuz shock got gas prices soaring by 41%, yet power prices fell by 9% on average. Clean, diversified electricity systems absorbed the geopolitical turbulence, fossil markets did not. This is “The power proof”.
So no doubt: electrification is ever more than before Europe’s most urgent security, competitiveness, and climate priority. As Commissioner Jørgensen said with clarity last June in Helsinki: “Our goal must be to transform Europe into the world’s first electro‑continent. Now is the time to electrify industry, vehicles, and buildings across Europe. Now is the time to push fossil fuels out of our energy system. Now is the time to bring Europe’s power to life.”
Power Barometer 2026 picks up exactly where this political momentum leads. It shows that Europe’s energy system has shifted structurally, and that the Hormuz shock made this clearer than ever. But it also reveals a new tension: as renewables surge, the system is starting to run out of room.
The good news is that solutions exist – and we’ll unpack these insights together on 30 September in Brussels, just as the Electrification Action Plan lands and Europe enters a decisive autumn for energy policy.

New to Power Barometer?
Every year, Eurelectric publishes its Power Barometer, a flagship data report tracking Europe’s electricity demand, supply, flexibility, prices and investment trends. It provides policymakers, industry leaders and analysts with a clear, evidence‑based picture of how Europe’s power system is evolving, and where action is most urgently needed.
