Upgrading Europe’s distribution grids to be fit for purpose

Join Eurelectric in shaping Europe’s next-generation distribution grids to deliver its clean-energy transition

Now is the time to ensure our grids are built for speed and resilience, ensuring Europe’s distribution networks fit for a decarbonised future.

Europe must invest up to €67 billion per year until 2050 to upscale its distribution grids to deliver the green transition. However, strategic grid investments combined with GETs — spanning planning, operations, and maintenance — can reduce overall system costs by 18%, saving around €13 billion annually. The Eurelectric Grids for Speed Business Hub brings together leading players across the European grids value chain to accelerate this transformation. Its mission is to:

- Unite Eurelectric members to share best practices, investment strategies, and case studies

- Create high-value networking opportunities to foster collaboration

- Deliver a showcase of actionable solutions that boost grid capacity, flexibility, and speed of deployment

As electricity demand accelerates and grid congestion becomes more widespread, flexibility is moving from promising pilot projects to a core pillar of Europe's power system. Beyond shifting demand in response to prices, flexibility is increasingly supporting congestion management, frequency control and overall system stability. This session will explore how Europe can scale local flexibility markets and demand-side participation from isolated demonstrations to system-wide deployment, unlocking existing grid capacity, reducing consumer costs and enabling faster electrification.

Why grid resilience is becoming more urgent: Electrification is increasing society’s dependence on electricity, while distribution grids face more climate extremes, digital risks, geopolitical threats and supply chain constraints. Resilient grids require stronger assets, smarter operations, secure digital systems and regulatory frameworks that enable DSOs to invest before the crisis happens.
