The Committee for regional development of the European Parliament has adopted its position on the Just Transition Fund. Eurelectric welcomes the vote by the REGI committee, as the Just Transition Fund plays a key role in addressing the asymmetrical effects the transition will have on some regions, jobs and economic activities.
However:
“We regret that the vote leaves a door open for investments in unsustainable fossil activities. We can no longer afford to channel EU funds into activities that delay the move towards climate neutrality. Instead, these resources should be directed towards renewable, smart and electric-based solutions to deliver a green recovery and a fair transition.” – said Henning Haeder, Policy Director of Eurelectric.
Last week the Electrification Alliance warned the members of the REGI committee and the rapporteurs about the negative consequences of prolonging the use of fossil fuels if these projects become eligible for the Just Transition Fund.
“To be an instrument of solidarity, the Fund must accelerate the deployment of clean solutions that deliver decarbonisation, are cost-effective and create the jobs and skills of the future in coal regions and across the EU.” – said the Alliance in its letter.
