We live in a world where instantaneous access to energy is the norm and crucial to much of society. In recent years, though, achieving this has come up against many challenges.
The early half of the 2020s proved a disruptive period for Europe, beginning with the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and an ensuing energy crisis, all the while the climate crisis continues to intensify. Amid this backdrop, the energy transition is unfolding on a global scale. This is redrawing the energy map and crowning new kingpins.
While we continue to decarbonise Europe’s economy with clean electricity, we need to make sure we can keep the lights on. With threats piling up, we need to redefine the concept of energy security to account for the role of electrification in securing, all the while decarbonising, our energy supply – that’s what we have done.
