Grid Requirement tackled
- The energy transition brings great challenges to the capacity and operation of mid- and low- voltage grids.
- To keep reliable and affordable grids, the DSO needs to invest and build, yet lacks labour, material and time.
Approach & solution
- The Grid as a Service (GaaS) is an autonomous software solution build on micro-services incl. industry standards like CIM.
- GaaS makes use of the sensors, other technological options, customer assets and market processes to actively manage the capacity in the mid- and low-voltage grid to increase the utilization.
- To make the GaaS work you need IT operation personnel and optional a system operations team built of grid experts and data analysts.
- It is best to have a dedicated System Operations business unit. Alternatively, it can be co-located with the grid operators.
- The GaaS is a Capex and Opex investment.
- We expect to be able to utilize the grid to a higher degree and due to flexible managing the capacity together with customer’s assets to connect more customers faster. Finally, it could lead to building less copper.
Benefits
What is the technology’s impact on below areas?
- The application of GaaS for system operations leads to connecting more customers faster, it supports the deferral of investments and makes the available grid capacity flexible.
- It increases customer satisfaction by enabling more customers access to the grid or increasing their connections faster.
- It helps DSOs increase their maturity by actively managing their mid- and low-voltage capacity, resulting in new or better capabilities in grid planning and life-cycle management.
- The GaaS actively makes use of market processes to manage capacity shortage with generation or consumption assets
