E-REDES: LV network monitoring and control

    Grid Requirement tackled

    • With the ongoing energy transition, an increasing number of devices for production, consumption, storage, metering, and demand-side management are being installed at the LV level. This rise in installations leads to more bidirectional flows of both electricity and data, adding complexity to the management and operation of the LV network.
    • Given the critical role of this infrastructure in supporting the energy transition, it requires levels of observability and controllability comparable to those already in place in MV and HV networks.

    Approach & solution

    • Centralized platform that combines IT and OT technology to monitor secondary substations in real time, and which is based on edge computing, big data and advanced analytics models (TRL 7).
    • The solution addresses the following needs of the DSO: 1) Monitor LV circuits for the timely detection of faults; 2) Monitor energy quality parameters; 3) Mapping and automated creation of the network topology; 4) Calculate technical and non-technical losses; 5) Monitor physical loss of the neutral conductor.
    • Investment on the solution is mostly CAPEX-based, with OPEX foreseen for the implementation of the platform.

    • Technological/time/economical savings: Reduction in average detection time and reduction of costs with monitoring the quality of supply.
    • Customers: Improved quality of supply.
    • DSOs: Potential for detecting and reducing fraud and theft and, consequently, improve efficiency through reduction of non-technical losses.
    • Timeline for deployment: In the short-term, the goal is to integrate all analytical layers/platforms into the corporate systems, and, in the medium-term in ADMS, increasing in parallel the number of monitored secondary substations.
