EDP: Operations and maintenance (O&M) knowledge Copilot

4 June 2026
GenAI copilots centralise O&M knowledge to support faster diagnosis and maintenance

    Context

For utilities operating a generation fleet spanning hydro, thermal, wind, and solar assets, operations and maintenance (O&M) activities depend on timely access to operational knowledge to support equipment issue diagnosis and maintenance decision-making.

    Challenge

Equipment issue resolution is slowed when operational knowledge is fragmented across multiple sources, making it difficult to diagnose problems quickly and consistently and increasing the risk of asset downtime.

    AI Solution

The solution is a Generative AI–based Copilot that centralises operational knowledge and supports faster diagnosis, guided troubleshooting and informed maintenance decision-making through natural language interaction.

    Impact & evidence

The solution is positioned to reduce diagnostic time through conversational access to technical documentation and to support standardised, AI-guided troubleshooting that enables faster maintenance execution; success is measured through reduction in average job duration and reduction in asset downtime.

    Implementation / Adoption

Replication requires digitised and structured O&M technical documentation, access to historical incidents and maintenance logs, a secure enterprise GenAI platform (for example, an Azure OpenAI–based platform), and O&M domain expertise for prompt and knowledge curation; applicability conditions include validated technical documentation, sufficient-quality historical O&M records, compliance with internal cybersecurity and access controls, and alignment with operational safety procedures. The implementation timelines includes knowledge ingestion and model configuration, a pilot with O&M teams in selected assets, and progressive operational usage with feedback-driven refinement.

    Data

The deployment of the solution requires internal O&M technical documentation, historical maintenance and incident records, and asset-specific engineering manuals

    Future enhancements

Planned enhancements include extension to additional asset types and geographies and deeper integration with maintenance management systems.
