Frumuşeni, a village in the county of Arad, is the first “Smart Village” in Romania to be selected by E.ON from around 1.550 villages. In the first phase, E.ON contributed to the modernization and efficiency of the interior lighting system in the buildings of public institutions in the commune. At the school, kindergarten, fire station and at the town hall, police and medical dispensaries, all lamps now have LED bulbs. In the second phase, a “Smart Street Lighting” concept has been installed, a system of LED systems equipped with sensors, to adjust the LED light to the outside light, but also to movement, in tune with the traffic. Moreover, the lighting system is interconnected with the security video cameras installed on the poles. Then, in phase three, the installation of photovoltaic panels is considered at some institutions to provide the electricity needs. And maybe even building, in partnership, a photovoltaic park.

Only 15 km away from Arad, the commune of Frumuşeni has a geographical position that favors it economically. It was selected from a number of 1,550 rural localities with potential for development and included in our company's program, "smart village".

So far, in Frumuşeni, we have contributed to the modernization and efficiency of the interior lighting system in the buildings of public institutions in the commune. At the school, kindergarten, fire station and at the town hall, police and medical dispensaries, all lamps now have LED bulbs.

We want to expand the concept of "smart village". The local administrations that will be included in this program will benefit from E.ON's advice in implementing energy efficiency solutions and support in preparing the documentation for financing these initiatives.

“Smart Street Lighting” means that the LED systems could also be equipped with sensors, as well. The latter will adjust the LED light to the outside light, but also to movement, in tune with the traffic. Overnight, when people and cars go about less, light intensity will be maintained at a low level. Thus, significant energy savings will be made. Moreover, the lighting system will be interconnected with the security video cameras installed on the poles.

A substantial reduction in electricity consumption, as well as CO2 emissions and, of course, a significant economy in the local budget, are just some of the benefits generated by the new public lighting system that was installed in Frumuşeni. The installation of the new lighting system reduces the pollution resulting from the annual energy consumption from 0.63 t CO2 to 0.19 t CO2. Much more efficient, the new luminaires have more than 3 times the operating hours than the classic ones.

And we won’t stop here. There will be a third stage, in which we are going to install photovoltaic panels on several local administration buildings. Having public buildings and institutions ensure the necessary energy through their own installations is no longer the stuff of the future. It is already happening also in Romania and things are taking off at speed.
