Fortum: Flexibility portfolio optimiser

4 June 2026
Optimizes behind-the-meter flexibility actions in real time

    Context

Markets utilities operate in have volatile energy prices and capacity constraints. Customers in these markets invest in distributed energy resources and seek solutions to optimise and monetise flexibility behind the meter.

    Challenge

Customers with distributed energy assets require real‑time control to ensure assets deliver the highest value across multiple possible use cases. Assets can perform functions such as peak shaving, load shifting, self‑consumption, capacity provision, and participation in flexibility markets, creating continuous optimisation complexity.

    AI Solution

AI‑powered optimisation engine which steers customer assets in real time. The solution evaluates available actions continuously and ensures assets perform the most valuable activity at each point in time. Referenced asset examples include customer battery energy storage systems (BESS).

    Impact & evidence

The solution enables real‑time optimisation, decision‑making, and control of customer assets across multiple flexibility use cases. Impact is measured in terms of number of customers, MW under management and value per MW created.

    Implementation / Adoption

Adoption of the solution requires customers with distributed energy assets operating in markets where access to trading is available, alongside an integrated flexibility technology stack connected to trading activities and supported by partner data science capabilities. The solution originated as a funded business concept in autumn 2024 and was developed into a live customer offering integrated within the business unit in under two years, reflecting the alignment between technical development and market access. This approach has enabled deployment in Sweden and Finland and provides the basis for expansion underway in Norway and exploration of additional markets.

    Data

The solution uses internal data, market data, weather data, price data, and customer‑specific forecasts created as part of the optimisation process.

    Future enhancements

Planned developments include geographic expansion, deeper integration within the utility to create a flexibility spine from customers to trading, and identification of additional value opportunities for customers and the utility. Further enhancement areas include partner data science capabilities and full integration of the flexibility technology stack.
