Business Models to Promote Energy Efficiency Services: Lessons learned from the electricity sector

Marriott Hotel

The vote on 28 February in the European Parliament has made clear the pivotal role that energy-end use saving schemes will play in implementing the Energy Efficiency Directive, once adopted. Energy companies will be called, directly or indirectly, to promote energy savings among their customers.

The electricity sector already provides energy efficiency services to customers on a daily basis. These services are instruments for building and sustaining long-lasting customer relationships, and have the potential to evolve into a successful business opportunity. But a well-functioning market needs not only strong supply: even more important is strong demand from the customer.

The key questions are quite straight-forward: what business models have electricity companies developed, and what models are they in the process of developing? How does the picture vary across Europe? How has the regulatory framework affected business strategies? What are the opportunities, lessons and pitfalls?

EURELECTRIC examined up to date practices and lessons learned in light of the latest policy developments on the proposed Energy Efficiency Directive.

The first part of the event addressed how the Energy Efficiency Directive fits within the bigger framework of the 2050 Energy Roadmap and the issue of coherence among the different EU climate policy instruments.

The second part presented and discussed business models developed by electricity companies under different regulatory frameworks.
