Comprehensive analyses and actionable insights into the key topics driving the transformation of the European electricity sector.

20 March 2026
Electricity is the backbone of modern society. It powers essential services like hospitals, communications, water systems, as well as transport and defence capabilities. That is precisely why power infrastructure has become a prime target for malicious actors.

Whenever someone installs a solar panel, heat pump, or EV charger, they must connect it to the electricity grid. The increasing deployment of renewable energy and electricity adoption led to significant grid connection queue backlogs across Europe’s electricity distribution networks. These delays hinder the energy transition, slow economic growth and create bottlenecks in grid use. In this article, we explain: what grid connections are, why they are piling up, and which practices Distribution System Operators (DSOs) are already adopting to manage them more effectively.

In just a few years, artificial intelligence has leapt from niche research projects to a widely accessible technology reshaping everyday life. While machine learning has existed since the 1990s, a breakthrough came with the introduction of ‘transformer architecture’ - the design that enabled today’s Large Language Models (LLMs) to be trained much faster and more effectively. Tools like ChatGPT from OpenAI have made these advances visible to the public: showing how AI can write essays, generate code, or create images in seconds. Behind these capabilities, are vast networks of servers in high-tech centres that process and store information at extraordinary speed. This rise has been fuelled by advances in computing hardware, the availability of huge datasets, and breakthroughs in AI models. But it has also brought new questions about the energy and water resources needed to sustain AI: how to make that demand sustainable for the long term, and how can AI help optimise energy generation and consumption worldwide.
